Isle of Mull Workshop 2026

Summer on Mull - Nature, Photography, and Cake

Join me for an unforgettable week of wildlife photography on the stunning Isle of Mull. We’ll focus on some of Scotland’s most iconic species, including otters, white-tailed eagles, and puffins, as well as seek out the other wildlife that thrives in Mull’s diverse habitats.

I’ve been photographing Mull’s incredible wildlife for over a decade though my love for the island started back in 1997 on a school trip. With years of experience exploring its landscapes, I can take you to some of the best spots to see and photograph wildlife.

While we have planned boat trips and guided excursions, I like to keep the itinerary flexible. This allows us to adapt to changing conditions, take advantage of the best photographic opportunities, and respond to any exciting wildlife sightings that may pop up during the week.

Dates

Saturday 30th May 2026 - Saturday 6th June

What can you expect from the trip?

This trip is designed to be a fun mix of wildlife photography, exploring the island, and great company.

With a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living area, and an outdoor space to relax, it’s the perfect base for our adventures. Located in central Mull, it’s ideally positioned for exploring the island.

All Meals Included – Delicious meals are provided throughout the trip. Dietary requirements will be catered for, just let me know at the time of booking (FYI I’m vegetarian).

Wildlife Boat Trips

  • 2 x Boat Trips for White-Tailed Eagles – Watching these birds never gets old and this will give you the best opportunity to get amazing images as they swoop down for fish.

  • 1 x Boat Trip to Lunga – Spend time among puffins and other seabirds on this stunning island at the best time of year - bluebell season.

  • Guided Wildlife Walk – A half-day with a local expert to seek out smaller species like butterflies, dragonflies, and beautiful demoiselles—perfect for macro photography.

  • Otter Photography & Wildlife Exploration – We’ll dedicate time to tracking and photographing otters in their natural habitat, learning about their behaviour along Mull’s extensive coastline.

  • Exploring Mull’s Shops & Cafés – No trip is complete without a stop at Mull’s popular cafés and shops. Cake is, of course, essential for otter spotting!

  • Evening Image Reviews (Optional & Informal) – A chance to review photos, share tips, and get feedback in a relaxed setting.

  • Transport on Mull – Travel in the comfort of ‘Alfie’, my campervan, which conveniently comes with a table for lunch stops!

Proposed Itinerary and areas of focus (this is subject to change depending on the availability of the boat trips)

Arrival Day – Saturday, 30th May

Welcome to Mull! After arriving and checking into our accommodation, we’ll take the evening to settle in and get to know each other ahead of an incredible week of wildlife photography.

Our base is in a fantastic location, with a local shop just a short walk away and two excellent bakeries  nearby—perfect for grabbing fresh pastries before setting out for the day.

White-Tailed Eagles – Boat Trips for Stunning Action Shots

Mull is one of the best places in Scotland to photograph white-tailed eagles, and we’ll have two dedicated boat trips to get the best possible views. Watching these incredible birds soar over the lochs and dive for fish is truly unforgettable. The dramatic cliffs and wild landscapes of Mull provide the perfect backdrop for breathtaking eagle photography.

Puffins & Seabirds – A Day Trip to Lunga

For any wildlife photographer, Lunga is a dream location for puffin photography. Just over an hour from Mull, this island is teeming with seabirds, and our trip—run by Turus Mara—gives us four hours to capture stunning shots. It’s also the perfect time of year, with bluebells and sea thrift creating a colourful setting for your images. And yes, you’ll probably take at least 7,249 puffin photos (give or take!). Depending on the tides and conditions, we may also have the chance to visit Staffa to see Fingal’s Cave.

Macro Photography – Butterflies & Demoiselles

While it’s easy to focus on Mull’s larger wildlife, the island is also home to incredible smaller species. With the help of a local guide, we’ll spend half a day seeking out the delicate marsh fritillary butterfly and the strikingly beautiful demoiselle damselflies—perfect for those who love macro photography.

Otter Photography – Mastering Fieldcraft

Mull’s 300 miles of coastline make it one of the best places in Scotland to photograph otters in the wild. We’ll dedicate time to tracking these elusive mustelids, learning the fieldcraft techniques needed to spot and photograph them without disturbance. With patience (and a little luck), we hope to get unforgettable encounters.

Exploring Mull – Wildflowers, Machair & More

While our main focus is on eagles, otters, and seabirds, we’ll also take time to explore other areas of Mull. The island is rich in wildflower meadows and machair, and we may visit Ulva or the beautiful rocky beach at Lochbuie—home to a fantastic café. Mull’s diverse habitats mean there’s always something new to see, so we’ll take every opportunity for unique wildlife encounters and landscape shots.

Whether you're passionate about bird photography, otters, or macro shots of butterflies, this wildlife photography trip to Mull offers an incredible mix of opportunities to capture the stunning wildlife in its natural habitat.

Departure Day - Saturday 6th June.

Sadly, it’s the end of our week and time to say goodbye. We’ll depart the cottage by 10am but that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your time on Mull. You can always extend your time by booking a later ferry home.

A few points to note:

  • The landing on Lunga requires stepping onto a pontoon followed by crossing a rocky beach. Depending on the tide and weather, surfaces can be slippery. To reach the puffin colony, there’s a steep (though short) path, and the island’s narrow trails may involve uneven terrain and occasional rocks to climb over.

  • For otter photography, we’ll be on foot along rocky shorelines, sometimes navigating through seaweed-covered areas. If you have any mobility concerns, please get in touch before booking—I’m happy to chat through what to expect.

  • All boat trips are weather dependent and sailings are at the discretion and conditions of the companies. Where a trip has to be cancelled, I will endeavour to rearrange but this also depends on availability.

What’s excluded:

  • Ferry booking and associated costs.

  • Other transport costs.

  • Any food purchased outside the meals provided.

  • Alcoholic drinks.

  • Travel or content insurance.

  • Camera equipment.

What should you bring?

  • Your camera and lens. I would recommend anything 300mm+ if possible, with extenders if you have them. You might also want to bring a wide angle lens if you want to photograph landscapes around the island or environmental shots on Lunga. If you have a macro lens for the butterflies and other insects, you may want to bring that (Mine is currently in pieces unfortunately)

  • Midge repellent and a midge net.

  • Tripod/Monopod.

  • Weather appropriate clothes (It’s Summer but it’s also Scotland!) sturdy walking boots and waterproofs. Consider walking poles but a monopod makes an excellent substitute.

  • Plenty memory cards, batteries, and chargers.

  • A laptop and cable to load your images.

  • I always bring an extension cord because plugs are never where you want them.
